Border controls between Germany and Poland: traffic jams and chaos threaten!
Uckermark, Deutschland - As if the situation at the borders were not already complicated enough, the German border controls introduced since October 2023 caused additional vertebrae for travelers from Poland. [Uckermark Kurier] (http://www.uckermarkurier.de/polen-stol-best- border-by-grenzt-nun-3731299) has reported that the controls trigger a real traffic jam on the Polish side-and not only for tourists, but also for the commuters who travel back and forth every day.
Now the number is becoming even more complex: from next Monday, commuters and truck drivers will also be checked on the Polish side. The controls are colorful mix of random checks. The focus is particularly on vehicles with many inmates and tinted windows. There are no trimmings or blocks, but traffic narrowing and signs that stop drivers to reduce their speed. However, for entry to Poland it remains the usual - a simple ID card is sufficient.
traffic chaos threatens
Brandenburg's interior minister already warns of a possible traffic collapse. Over 13,000 people commute to Saxony every day, while over 14,000 go to Brandenburg. The numbers speak a clear language and show how important a smooth border crossing for the region is. The controls are part of Germany's efforts to curb irregular migration - after all, more than 7,960 unauthorized entry have been registered since May 8th.
But the problem is not only noticeable on site. The chambers of industry and commerce in Brandenburg raise the alarm and warn of economic losses. The exports from Brandenburg to Poland will be estimated at an estimated 4.1 billion euros in 2024. Such sums are a strong argument, but while some whine, right -wing extremist groups take advantage of the situation to organize patrols at the border, looking for migrants.
EU migration policy in focus
In the broader European perspective, the EU shows that it still wants to make progress. According to the information from Tagesschau, the number of irregular border crossings in the EU dropped by almost 30 percent in the first four months of 2025. Nevertheless, the debate about asylum procedures and border controls remains highly topical. In April 2024, the parliament approved a new border process for asylum decisions that aimed at accelerating the processing.
This is not just about numbers, but also about the basics: Anyone who represents a danger to public order or comes from a country of origin in which less than 20 percent of the asylum applications are approved must expect faster procedures. In fact, the responsible authorities have to decide on applications within twelve weeks.
However, the normalization of the situation at the borders remains uncertain and depends largely on future reforms in the asylum system. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming weeks.
