Only 25% of the courses in MV: Access restrictions in a descent!
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Deutschland - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the courses are as accessible as it is rarely before. According to current reports, only every fourth course of study in the winter semester 2025/26 has access restrictions. Specifically, it is 25.1 percent of the courses offered that are affected by regulations such as the Numerus Clausus and aptitude assessment procedures. The decline is striking, especially since the quota nationwide is 32.25 percent, such as N-tv reported.
What triggered this change? Experts attribute the decline in access to falling first semester, while the number of courses increasingly increases. The relationship between applicants and study places also improves in popular and traditionally restricted subjects such as medicine and pharmacy. This is no coincidence, because nationwide the proportion of access -limited courses in the winter semester 2024/25 was still 35.2 percent, such as Showed.
placements of the federal states
In the ranking of the federal states, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shows 10th out of 16 when it comes to access restrictions. In Berlin, for example, more than half of the courses (54.4%) are limited, followed by Baden-Württemberg with 50.2 percent and Hamburg with 49.2 percent. On the other hand, Brandenburg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia are located, where the odds are lowest with 17.4%, 17.7% and 18.0%.
The analysis comes from the CHE Centrum for University Development, which has been taking a close look at the number of students and access restrictions for several years. Its data are based on the university compass of the university rector conference and provide valuable insights into the dynamics of the German University System.
Development of the courses
The proportion of access -limited courses has decreased significantly since the winter semester of 2017/18 - at that time it was 42.4 percent. One trend is obvious: While the number of applicants decreased between the winter semester 2020/21 and 2024/25, the number of study places on offer increased easily. In particular, the places are awarded in the most in demand.
Finally, it can be said that the Situation at universities in Germany is constantly changing and, like many other federal states, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has taken an interesting development path.
