New town hall in Rostock: Laying the foundation for modern administration!

The expansion of the Rostock town hall takes shape: On July 4, 2025, the ceremonial foundation stone for the project took place, which is eagerly awaited. The new building comprises two striking buildings - the double gable house (house C) and the administration building (house D) - which are to be built on the Neuer Markt. The entire construction period is scheduled from 2023 to 2028, and the investments amount to around 80 million euros, of which around 15.5 million euros come from urban development grants. Rathaus Rostock reports that the own company municipal property management and development (KOE) is significantly involved in the implementation of the project.

With the expansion, the city pursues the goal of strengthening the administrative location on the Neuer Markt and at the same time promoting the proximity to the citizens. One of the central elements of house C will be a multifunctional citizenship hall and offices for the president of the citizens. A barrier -free space with space for 50 people is set up for weddings. The concept also provides modern working worlds with over 400 jobs and individual consulting rooms. The outdoor facilities are also designed by the Rostock Society for urban renewal, urban development and housing (RGS), which should strengthen the overall picture of the area.

house C and D in detail

As planned, the new double gable house (house C) includes conference rooms and the popular citizenship hall. History specialists know the historical double gable house, which was destroyed in the Second World War and was one of the most beautiful in northern Germany at the time. The newly designed building wants to build on this tradition and will have a facade design in a typical region.

The administration building (house D) will record the local office and the migration office and have an underground car park with 110 parking spaces. In addition, two roof terraces are planned to serve employees and visitors as residence zones. A special highlight: Both buildings are equipped with a photovoltaic system on the roofs, which not only makes the electricity generated on site, but also contributes to reducing the operating costs. The house D even strives for a gold certification of the German Society for Sustainable Building (DGNB), which takes into account the high demands of sustainability.

archaeological discoveries and outlook

The construction site is also an archaeological window into the past: Since the start of the preparatory measures in March 2023, archaeologists have been carrying out excavations on site. Exciting finds such as curse tablets, historical basements and rare bowls have already been made. The construction site is therefore not only a place of the new, but also tells a lively story about the old Rostock. Rathaus Rostock emphasizes that the archaeological work will be completed by 2025, while the shell construction is expected to start in 2024.

With the ambitious project, Rostock shows that you have a good knack for modern and user -friendly administrative structures that are also considerate of historical values and environmental standards. It remains exciting how this project will develop in the coming years!
