Arson in Chemnitz: fire brigade extinguishes fire at the old wooden house!

On Thursday afternoon, shortly before twelve, the fright in Chemnitz was great: from a plot of land on Bernsdorfer Strasse, thick smoke in the air. An old wooden house, located right next to the tracks, was on fire. The fire brigade quickly arrived and blocked Bernsdorfer Straße out of town. Fortunately, fire fighting was quickly successful, so that the fire could be spread to neighboring trees. Fortunately, there was no injured, but the strongly dilapidated building is another sad sight in the city.

The determination of the cause of the fire is currently in full swing. It is assumed by arson, so the police secure the traces on site and hopes for information from witnesses who may have seen something. The damage caused by the property remained manageable by the rapid intervention of the emergency services, but the incident represents an alarming development in relation to the security of the environment.

As soon as the smoke had laid around Bernsdorfer Straße, there was another alarming incident. At the intersection Paul-Jäkel-Straße and Wattstraße, around 1 a.m. a fire broke out in the roof structure of an empty corner house, which is in renovation. Residents had alerted the fire brigade, which the fire could quickly control. Here too, possible arson is assumed, the Chemnitz criminal police are now investigating in this case.

In March there was already a fire in the same building, which supports the police suspect that strangers have laid fire in the roof structure. The property damage is several thousand euros, but fortunately no person was harmed here. In the meantime there was another fire brigade in Hainstraße due to an apartment fire in the evening, caused by a burned food in which a person suffered slight flue gas poisoning.

The events in Chemnitz are not unique. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, numerous cases of arson were recorded in Germany between 2014 and 2024. This worrying development shows that arson is again a burning topic, of course also for the Chemnitz population. The current and past statistics show that prevention measures are urgently necessary to prevent such cases in the future.

Overall, it remains to be seen which further investigation results the police can present in the coming days. Citizens are called up to be vigilant and report suspicious observations. It is up to all of us to have a good hand in the neighborhood and stay aware.
