The numbers speak for themselves: In 2024, the number of accidents involving water-polluting substances in Saxony-Anhalt increased to 49 cases. This corresponds to an increase of 7 accidents compared to the previous year, when 42 incidents were registered. The trend in accidents in the handling and transport of these substances is particularly alarming, as Hallanzeiger reports.

Of the 49 accidents, 17 occurred during direct handling of water-polluting substances, while 32 accidents occurred during their transport. In 2023, the corresponding numbers were 15 and 27 - a clear increase can also be seen here. The amount of water-polluting substances released in 2024 totaled 681.7 m³, a significant reduction compared to 1,601.5 m³ in the previous year. Nevertheless, concern remains high, as 26 of the accidents are due to human error and 12 to material defects, as the Dubisthalle states.

Effective recovery of materials

Despite the accidents, there is also positive news: an impressive recovery rate of 99.4% was achieved, a significant increase compared to the 48.9% in 2023. Of the total released substances, 678.0 m³ were successfully recovered. The majority of these materials, approximately 668.4 m³ or 98.0%, is composed of other materials such as manure, manure and silage leachate, while the remaining 2.0% (13.3 m³) consists of petroleum products.

The recovery measures were particularly active in the Halle (Saale) area, especially at the freight station and the Weinberg Campus, where in 39 accidents the released substances could be completely recovered through quick measures. These successes show that intensive effort was required to minimize environmental damage and make the handling of hazardous substances safer.

In summary, it can be said that the increased number of accidents represents a serious problem, but the successful recovery of the materials shows that a good hand can be demonstrated in overcoming these challenges. It remains to be seen what measures will be taken to better prevent human errors and material defects in the future.
