Archeology Congress in Frankfurt (Oder): Together into the past!
The archeology congress began in Frankfurt (Oder) on Monday, September 8th, 2025 and will last until Thursday, September 11th. The event is well attended with up to 250 participants from all over Germany. It was not without reason that the event location was chosen in this border town with Poland, as German-Polish cooperation in archeology is to be intensified here. The importance of the border region as an archaeological research area is also emphasized. RBB24 reports that some of the events will take place in the Collegium Polonicum in Słubice.
On Tuesday, September 9th, there will be a public evening lecture by the Brandenburg state archaeologist, Prof. Dr. Franz Schopper, expected. He will speak about archaeological research into the Bronze Age. In addition to lectures, excursions are also planned. On Thursday, September 11th, we will go to a 14th century brick castle in Łagów as well as to the Archaeological Museum in Zielona Góra and an Iron Age rampart in Wicina. These program items are of great interest not only to experts, but also to citizens interested in history. The BLDAM website highlights that the event is organized in cooperation with the European University Viadrina Foundation and the Collegium Polonicum.
Conference details and organization
The congress is also an important platform for the various antiquity research associations, including the Central and East German Association and the West and South German Association. Conferences like this not only strengthen the exchange between scientists, but also promote the connection of research results in Brandenburg and the neighboring voivodships. On Monday there was already a reception by the city of Frankfurt (Oder) in the town hall, which set the mood for the celebratory setting of the event.
Conference participants have the opportunity to exchange ideas about relevant archeological topics and present cutting-edge research results. A contribution of 35 euros for the excursion also includes meals, which makes visiting the sights in Poland even more attractive.
Award for young talents
Parallel to the congress, attention will be drawn to the German Study Prize for Archeology, which offers young scientists the opportunity to present their first major scientific work for discussion. In exceptional cases, exceptional academic achievements can also be recognized. The aim is to reward outstanding research work on the history of Central Europe or regions that influenced it. Archeology informed online that proposals can be submitted by both students and lecturers, which is an incentive for many young researchers.
With a comprehensive program and valuable exchange, the archeology congress in Frankfurt (Oder) will be a step into the future of archaeological research in Germany and beyond.
