Construction work on a new turning track in Halle-Neustadt will start soon
Big changes are planned for the tram network in Halle-Neustadt on June 23, 2025. The Stadtwerke Halle and Hallesche Verkehrs-AG (HAVAG) have officially announced the start of an extensive construction project that aims to build a new turning track at the Schwimmhalle stop. This enables more flexible integration of additional tram lines into the existing network, which is particularly important for school transport and during peak hours. This measure is part of the larger STADTBAHN program, which promotes the further development of local public transport in the region. According to HAVAG, the integration of new routes is a key initiative to make local transport fit for the future while increasing travel speed and comfort for passengers.
Construction work will begin on Monday, June 30, 2025 and is expected to be completed before the start of the new school year on Sunday, August 10, 2025. However, traffic adjustments will be necessary during the construction period. From June 30th, HAVAG buses will stop at the edge of the road instead of in the track area, and from July 21st there will be restrictions on tram traffic. These then only travel to the Neustadt S-Bahn station, where a replacement rail service will be set up between Soltauer Straße, Göttinger Bogen and Neustadt S-Bahn station. This means that passengers have to adapt to an adjusted timetable, which will be announced promptly.
A view of the construction site
The construction work not only includes the 60 meter long siding, but also the installation of three new switches and adjustments to the contact wire system. Changes also need to be made to the traffic lights at the An der Magistrale/Nietlebener Straße junction. Motorists will be able to drive past the construction site in one lane during construction, and pedestrians will also have the opportunity to pass through. Normal operations for trams, buses and cars are scheduled to resume from August 11, 2025, but remaining work will last until the end of August.
The expansion of public transport will be important not only locally, but also on a national level. Halle plays a central role in the nationwide initiative to improve local public transport. These measures are not only crucial for the liveliness of the city, but also contribute to social participation, especially for older people, who often do not have access to a car and rely on public transport. The federal government invests more than ten billion euros in public transport every year, which underlines the importance of this infrastructure. Innovative development, including the digitalization of transport and the increased use of electric buses, is also supported to improve the quality of life in cities.
Conclusion
The upcoming construction work for the new turning track in Halle-Neustadt is an important step towards sustainable local transport. The project, which is supported by the city of Halle as well as by the Halle municipal utilities and Halleschen Verkehrs-AG, shows how important a well-developed infrastructure is for the quality of life of citizens. Further details about the adjusted timetables and routes will be published in the next few days. We'll stay tuned and report on all developments!
