Tree sponsorships in the Palmengarten: Protect Frankfurt's climate!

There is a new project in the heart of Frankfurt that is intended to bring a breath of fresh air to the climate protection movement. The Palmengarten is looking for enthusiastic sponsors of trees in order not only to protect nature, but also to improve the urban climate. The initiative was launched by the head of the environmental department, Tina Zapf-Rodríguez, who acts as a sponsor for a special loquat, and found an active supporter in Palmengarten director Katja Heubach. Together they want to encourage citizens to actively support climate protection because, as we often hear from Frankfurters: “There is something going on!” FAZ reports that there have been repeated requests from city residents who are willing to donate or care for a tree.

Sponsorships are not only a simple act of support, but also offer the opportunity to establish a personal connection with nature. Visitors can choose from a total of 31 trees, categorized into trees of the future, trees of record and trees with history. Current alternatives include heat and drought-resistant plants such as the sweet chestnut, the American hackberry tree or the Hungarian oak - all trees that are proving to be robust in the face of climate change. FR reports that the annual costs for a sponsorship are 40, 90 or 200 euros, depending on the tree category.

The benefits of sponsorship

The sponsorship goes far beyond just a voucher. As a sponsor you receive a certificate and information about the tree you have chosen. A special feature: The sponsorships can also be given away to others, which offers a creative way to encourage friends and family to support the climate. Especially the oldest trees with history, such as the 150-year-old hanging beech or the Atlas cedar, planted in 1909, offer a captivating connection to local culture. These impressive plants could grow up to 40 meters high and require special care.

The need for such projects is made all the more clear by the current challenges of climate change. Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have highlighted the importance of green spaces for the urban climate in their studies. KIT informed that various tree structures not only regulate microclimates, but also play an essential role in the well-being of city residents.

A step in the right direction

The commitment to the Palmengarten is more than a beauty project - it is a step in the right direction to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. The donations help to care for the trees, water them and protect them from the ever-increasing environmental influences. Zapf-Rodríguez, head of the environmental department, asserts with conviction that “together we can make a difference.” The motto couldn't be more appropriate, because every little contribution counts. Donations can be made to the account of the Palm Garden and Botanical Garden Foundation, and further information can also be found online.
