Chile and Saxony: Together for the future of hydrogen research!
Chemnitz, Deutschland - On May 27, 2025, a delegation from the Chilean embassy attended the Technical University of Chemnitz. The ambassador María Magdalena Atria Barros led the visit, which served the exchange of knowledge and the promotion of common interests as part of the "Saxon Science Liaison Office Chile" (SSLO Chile). The aim was to get to know hydrogen research at the TU Chemnitz and to identify potential collaborations between Saxony and Chile. Prof. Dr. Maximilian Eibl and Dr. Benny Liebold received the delegation and led them through the program, which included presentations about current projects and international measures.
A central topic of the visit was the professorship for alternative vehicle drives, led by Prof. Dr. Thomas von Unwerth. Among other things, the international cooperation opportunities and the newly established master's program "hydrogen technologies" were presented. An informal exchange took place during a lunch in the cafeteria, in which both sides exchanged the respective research and educational concerns.
reception and symbolism
After the laboratory management, which the delegation introduced even deeper into the research topics, the ambassador in the town hall of Chemnitz was received by Mayor Sven Schulze. The visit ended with a symbolic entry by María Magdalena Atria Barros in the Golden Book of the City of Chemnitz and underlined the importance of the internationally active research and educational institutions.
The SSLO Chile has the task of promoting academic mobility and cooperation in existing research, innovation and education between Saxony and Chile. These initiatives make it possible to present Saxony as an attractive work environment, especially through the targeted recruitment of international students. In addition to Chile, five other offices in countries such as Taiwan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Vietnam and India have been opened in recent years to support this strategy. Saxony has thus developed a clear plan for the acquisition of specialists that are urgently needed in areas with a shortage of skilled workers. The connection between the university and the Saxon economy is specifically promoted here.
hydrogen research in focus
In the context of hydrogen research, the Technical University of Chemnitz is also part of a wider network that deals with the entire hydrogen value chain. The developments in this area are crucial to ensure that hydrogen is socially accepted as an energy source and is therefore also one of the central aspects in the research of the TU. A central focus topic is the safety aspects of hydrogen technologies that affect both components and their operation. In order to create the framework conditions for innovative business models around hydrogen, extensive policy analyzes are required. A funded project for the development of a national standardization road map has already started with the aim of identifying standardization needs by the end of 2025. Sustainability remains a driving factor in the hydrogen economy. All processes for hydrogen production are examined closely with regard to their ecological effects, whereby socio-economic aspects are also taken into account.
The cooperation between Saxony and Chile in hydrogen research and in educational institutions not only offers opportunities for both countries, but also contributes to the development of technologies and systems that will design the energy future.
