Cameroon: The forgotten crisis - millions in need and without help!
In the current humanitarian crisis in Cameroon, the circumstances are devastating, according to a study by the Norwegian Refugee Council. In 2024, around 3.4 million people in Cameroon were urgently dependent on help and protection. The main causes for the ongoing humanitarian need are climate change and violent acts of Islamist terrorist organizations, especially Boko Haram. The study shows that over 1.1 million people were sold within the country and that almost half a million refugees and asylum seekers from neighboring countries are looking for protection in Cameroon. Cameroon, as a result, represent these challenges as the most neglected crisis region in the world, such as KN-Online.de reported.
The humanitarian aid plan for Cameroon was only 45 percent financed. Of the $ 371 million required, only $ 168.2 million were provided. Many displaced families live without legal protection or the opportunity to make a living, especially in the northern part of the country on the Cschadsee, which is considered the poorest region of Cameroon and suffers greatly from nutritional uncertainty.
Current developments and challenges
In 2023, the situation in Cameroon was perceived as one of the most overlooked crises. By December 31, 2023, numerous displacements were recorded: 453,661 people in the Far North region, 621,591 in the Southwest and Northwest regions as well as more than 354,000 refugees from the Central African Republic. In his annual report, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) emphasized that only 31 % of the Humanitarian Response Plans were financed by the end of 2023. Nevertheless, the NRC 186,685 people with vital support were able to achieve legal help, water, accommodation and education, as shown in the report of nrc.no
The international community is asked to draw more attention to the complex situation in Cameroon and to ensure support. The initiatives require more financial means and political measures to help the affected people.
context of global migration
In the far -reaching context, the World Migration Report 2024 of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) shows that the number of global migrants has risen to 281 million in the inside, including 117 million displaced persons. This increase has been the highest level since the beginning of the records. The report, which was published on May 7, 2024 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, emphasizes how essential reversations of migrants: Inside, GDP of developing countries more promote than foreign direct investments. The IOM General Director Amy Pope emphasizes the importance of migration for human development and global prosperity, while the report stimulates to clear out myths about migration and use evidence-based data for political decisions, as on germany.iom.int
