Practical heat protection tool for municipalities: security in summer!

On June 3, 2025, the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG) announced the publication of an extensive online toolkit that focuses on heat protection. This happens in the run -up to the nationwide day of action on June 4th. The toolkit is aimed at those responsible in municipalities, daycare centers, schools, care facilities and social services and has the purpose of protecting citizens from the health consequences of heat. The materials provided contain easily understandable information and practical recommendations to counteract the increasing heat.

dr. Johannes Nießen, provisional director of the BIÖG, emphasized the importance of the local implementation of heat protection measures. This is particularly relevant in view of the increasing temperatures and the associated health risks that affect not only older people, but also children and other vulnerable groups. The toolkit is available via the website www.klima-mensch-gesundheit.de and offers, among other things, a daily heat warning card as well as individually adaptable posters and information flyers in several languages.

versatile offers for heat protection

The portal also comes up with a variety of tips that are adapted to different population groups. In addition to the materials already mentioned, the toolkit also includes a media library with further resources on climate and health. All municipal facilities receive the material package digitally. This is a continuation of the successful campaign from the previous year, which has already proven to be sustainable and effective.

In a comprehensive approach to combating the heating fames, the organization also works for the health insulation in Germany. The organization advises health and social services as well as municipalities with regard to heat protection measures and promotes the formation of local heat protection allies. A large network of experts is used to network with experts from clinical practice, research and public healthcare.

education and information as a key

In addition, Klug supports the integration of civil society actors such as "Health for Future" in order to strengthen the awareness of heat protection. In order to address health consequences of heat, training modules and accompanying materials for health professions are provided. This also happens in cooperation with the Center for Planetary Health Policy (CPHP), with which regulatory questions and legal framework are discussed.

The BIÖG and clever show with these initiatives how important it is to take proactive measures to protect the population, and offer a wide range of information resources in order to counter the heat summer. Further information can be found at www.bioeg.de and www.klimawandel-gesundheit.de
