Science meets pub: Knowledge of the barrel in Hamburg unleashed curiosity!
On May 28, 2025, the University of Hamburg, together with the Desy research center, invites you to a special event: "Knowledge of the barrel". This innovative initiative aims to convey current research results in a relaxed atmosphere by organizing lectures in around 50 pubs and bars in the city. The event should be accessible to the general public, regardless of their prior knowledge.
A colorful program awaits the participants, with topics that range from dark matter over 5000 years old letter secrets to climate protection and the influence of language on identity. Other exciting topics include space travel, mini accelerator and the dangers of black holes, as well as the role of sign languages and Hamburg's development to the tree capital of the future. Exchange and discussions are firmly planned and invite the citizens to actively participate.
science communication in focus
The event "Knowledge of the Fass" is not just an example of successful science communication, but at the same time part of a broader trend that is promoted in Germany. Scientific knowledge plays a crucial role in coping with social challenges, since they flow directly into everyday life and the working life of people. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) uses various measures to strengthen science communication and to promote dialogue between researchers and the public. In the coalition agreement of the Federal Government of 2021 it is stated that informed citizens are essential for a functioning democracy.
A central element of the BMBF initiatives is the transfer unit that supports the dialogue between science communication practice and research. There is also an impact unit that promotes the development and evaluation of science communication. Platforms such as wisskomm.de and the WissKomm Campus offer extensive information and resources for researchers to improve their communication skills.
The role of the DFG
The German Research Foundation (DFG) sees science communication as a central task of publicly funded research. She intends to strengthen the trust between science and society and ensure that scientific knowledge is incorporated into social decision -making processes. The DFG supports scientists in Germany and in German research institutions abroad and promotes science communication in all its programs that are bound to research projects.
The DFG emphasizes the importance of a dialogue between science and external target groups. Through various events, exhibitions and online formats, the DFG actively contributes to science communication. In addition, the DFG is involved in overarching initiatives, for example in the science years of the BMBF and in the “Science in Dialog” network. These efforts contribute to increasing the visibility and accessibility of science for everyone and thus raising social awareness of important topics.
Overall, the activities of "Knowledge of the Fass" clarify, paired with the extensive support measures of the BMBF and the DFG how important science communication is for the connection between research and society. It is expected that such initiatives continue to promote interest in scientific issues and stimulate discussion.
