Brenntrog race in Groß Berkel: a festival of tradition and joy!

In Groß Berkel, the organizers are intensively preparing for a spectacular event: the annual Brenntrog race, a competition that inspires not only the participants, but also the entire community. Maren Büthe, Thomas Thau and Mayor Jürgen Kolodziejczak are prepared, and the wooden Brenntrog tradition is to be brought back to life from August 21 to 26, 2023 at the Friedel-Curt Redeker yard. The race started in the 1990s when the wooden troughs, which were originally used for house slaughtering, served as a competitive means in the waters, such as Dewezet.de

The event has continued to develop since then and attracts numerous spectators to cheer on the participants. In 2023 the event will be a special highlight, because TSV 05 Groß Berkel, the organization team of the race, also celebrates its 120th anniversary. Büthe himself took part in the premiere of the race in 1993, and she hopes that her children, who have already participated in the last races, will continue to be integrated into this tradition.

The event and its formats

The Brenntrog race is divided into different age groups. The participants must be from the age of ten to paddle in the competition. Here the athletes complete exciting preliminaries and the grand finale, which will take place on August 26 from 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 21, is opened with a first training run, followed by the preliminaries that take place on Wednesday, August 23 and Friday, August 25th. The participants not only have to be able to swim, but are also encouraged to dress in original "racing suits" and to wear lifeguards, such as Dewezet.de

A total of around 25 teams will compete in the different classes. The event is supported by a variety of helpers, including members of the TSV 05, the fire brigade and the DLRG, who all work hand in hand to organize this colorful festival for the community. Mayor Kolodziejczak emphasized the importance of the race for cohesion and the community in Groß Berkel.

entertainment program and atmosphere

In addition to the sporting competitions, the event is waiting for visitors with a comprehensive entertainment program. From 3 p.m. on the final day, guests have the opportunity to fortify themselves with coffee and waffles, while an evening program with live music will provide additional entertainment. The entire community is cordially invited to celebrate on the banks of the Humme and on the Redeker family's farm and to celebrate the traditional event, as can be read on the side of the TSV 05 Groß Berkel

With this mixture of sport, tradition and community feeling, the Brenntrog race will also be an indispensable part of cultural life in Groß Berkel in 2023.
