Kitchen disaster in Rotherbaum: Ammonia leaving exit ensures large-scale operation!
On Wednesday morning, May 28, 2025, there was a dramatic coolant exit from a cooling system in Hamburg-Rotherbaum on Von-Melle-Platz. The Hamburg fire brigade was alerted after a leak was discovered in a basement room that released a dangerous amount of ammonia. Even before the first emergency services arrived, the alarm level was increased to mobilize the required special forces for technology and environmental protection.
The fire brigade quickly determined increased measured values in the affected area, which led to an immediate procedure under the highest safety precautions. Equipped with chemical protective suits, the emergency services had to proceed with great caution. A technician finally succeeded in making the cooling system presseless, while in the parallel, gases were off the room. Around 75 firefighters were used over five and a half hours and also set up a decontamination route for the officials who were active in the danger area.
