In Rhineland-Palatinate, there were closures of regional train lines due to fallen trees. Over 40 missions for fire brigade and emergency services were registered in the Trier area. In Idar-Oberstein a flash hit a building and injured a resident.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, heavy rain caused flooded roads and full cellar, but there were no injuries. The DWD had already expected severe thunderstorms for the weekend in Bavaria.

climate change and extreme weather events

The strong weather phenomena are also in the context of global warming, as an analysis of the DWD shows. According to DWD

In Germany, an increasing number of days with high temperatures can be observed, while cold winter and cool summer are less common. The events of the weekend are therefore part of a long -term trend that increases the likelihood of storm events.

For Monday, a continuation of the thunderstorm activity in the south and east of Bavaria was predicted. According to the forecasts, up to 30 liters of heavy rain and hail can be expected of a larger scope. The DWD therefore recommends avoiding the outdoor stay and withdrawing to safe buildings. Drivers should also avoid flooded roads and underpasses.
