The fire brigade was alerted in Bochum late Thursday evening after a tenant discovered Rauch in his storage room in Brüderstrasse. He could not find the cause and called the emergency services. When arriving, the firefighters found a dangerous carbon monoxide concentration.

The assumption was that the shisha bar on the ground floor and an exhaust pipe that led to the first floor were the sources of the gas.
