Security for children: Police Cologne controls drivers in front of schools

The Cologne police took part in the nationwide traffic safety campaign "Safe.Mobil.leben - Kinder im Blick" on Tuesday, June 3, to improve the protection of children on road traffic. In 2024, over 400 children suffered serious injuries in traffic accidents, a particularly tragic case occurred on January 30, 2025, when an 11-year-old girl had a fatal crashed on her way to school in Leverkusen-Opladen.

As part of the campaign, the police checked the driving behavior around schools and discovered over 70 violations. Among them were 18 speed overruns and nine drivers who used their cell phone while driving. In addition, seven drivers showed false turning behavior. The officers were supported by traffic safety consultants who trained the behavior on zebra crossing with students from the Berthold Otto primary school in Cologne-Mülheim. This action is crucial to protect both children and to raise the awareness of drivers for security in school zones.
