ADAC calls for switching to Super E10: High prices and the environment in demand!

Deutschland - ADAC President Christian Reinicke has urged to advance the use of Super E10 in order to contribute to the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Super E10, which may contain up to ten percent biosprit, is suitable for cars from the year of construction 2011. Despite the environmental advantages, many consumers continue to refuel the more expensive and more climate -damaging Super E5, which includes a maximum of five percent biosprit. At petrol stations, there is currently a duty to offer E5, which Reinicke considers to be outdated. He suggests changing this obligation to Super E10 to create incentives for more environmentally friendly refueling.

The ADAC is increasingly receiving inquiries from members who inquire about the price changes. A ADAC spokesman confirms that the price difference between E10 and E5 has dropped since the beginning of the year. The reasons for this are, among other things, strategic price plans for mineral oil companies, the influence of which is reinforced by the new environmental regulations. The biofuel quota has increased since January 1, which also influences the price for E10, which has a higher proportion of bioethanol than E5

price development at petrol stations

The tightened environmental regulations have meant that E10 now costs the same as Super E5. In the past, the price difference between these two types of fuel was usually between two and four cents per liter. Last year E10 was often six cents cheaper than E5. The pricing in the petrol station sector is characterized by a "hard struggle" because different strategies for companies are used. ADAC measurements also show that the consumption of refueling E10 is slightly increased on average.

Reinicke names Austria as a positive example where there is no longer an obligation to offer E5. In Germany, the Federal Association of Free Petrol States (BFT) also pleads together with the Fuels and Energy Economic Association for the abolition of this obligation. The BFT argues that E5 is no longer relevant and should create space for alternative fuels like HVO.

market shares of E10 and E5

statistics show that in 2022 E5 E5, 67.5 percent, made the largest proportion of petrol deliveries in Germany, followed by E10 with 27.4 percent and Super Plus with 5.1 percent. In 2023, the E10 share rose to 26.4 percent, which shows that despite the efforts to promote the use of E10, the growth remains minimal.
