The state of Baden-Württemberg is significantly investing in the support of scientific institutions to promote innovations. Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economics, Labor and Tourism, emphasizes the central role of the research institutes of the Baden-Württemberg (InnBW) innovation alliance. These institutions contribute to asserting the country's innovation leadership in promising industries and in particular strengthen the needs of medium -sized businesses. The minister emphasizes that annual basic financing is crucial to ensure the performance and strategic development of the InnBW. 

Baden-Württemberg has an impact on consolidating its position as a leading economic region in Europe and creating future-proof jobs. The InnBW research institutes play a key role. They promote innovation and economic growth through close cooperation with companies, especially small and medium-sized companies (SMEs), which often do not have the necessary resources for comprehensive research and development work. Many of the institute projects are based on public financing or are realized as commissioned work for companies, which often includes cooperation with SMEs.

The innovation ecosystem in Baden-Württemberg is supported by the InnBW as a central pillar. In total, the InnBW consists of ten non-university research institutions with twelve institutes that cover central growth and future fields. These include digitization, artificial intelligence, industry 4.0, quantum technologies, sustainable mobility, health economy, environmental and energy technologies as well as resource efficiency and circular economy. In 2024, the InnBW research institutes are funded with around 38.6 million euros, which contributes to the fact that over 5,500 research projects are carried out annually.

The cooperation between academic research and practical application is funded by the InnBW. It helps companies to identify challenges and to develop innovative approaches and new technologies. The support ensures that the region remains competitive in important future fields. 

Support for small and medium -sized companies

Small and medium-sized companies play an essential role in the economic structure of Baden-Württemberg and need support in the innovation process. Here the country offers various programs to help these companies. The program of the innovation vouchers enables SME access to financial aid for external research and development services. In addition, the L-Bank provides interest-loving loans for technology-oriented projects, which is important to the company when implementing new ideas.

At the federal level, there are numerous programs such as the central innovation promotion program Mittelstand (ZIM) and the EU framework program Horizont 2020, which also aim to integrate SMEs into their innovation projects. In this context, the Steinbeis-Europe-Center offers support in researching European funding and evaluating innovation projects.
