Beer shortage threatens: strikes in North German breweries!

In northern Germany, the nerves are currently blank: the employees in the breweries demand an increase in wages and threaten other strikes. As the Mopo has so far been unable to agree with the employers. A 24-hour warning strike has already taken place in several breweries, with minimal effects on production.

The Flensburg brewery in particular was affected, but production could be maintained through preliminary productions and support from other areas. The Carlsberg brewery in Hamburg also reported that other team members caught up the effects of the warning strike and there were no delivery bottlenecks.

negotiation Situation and claims

The NGG calls for a retrospective wage increase of 6% for 12 months, starting from April 2023. This is necessary in order to meet the high pressure to perform and the increasing cost of living. Employers, on the other hand, only offer a wage increase of 1% on October 01, 2025 and 2.1% from April 1, 2026 if the term of the collective agreement is extended.

In addition to the wage increases, the NGG has requested an increase of 150 euros for trainees and a mobility grant of 58 euros per month. The situation is tense because the current collective agreement was terminated on time on March 31, 2025, as the Ngg explained.

The brewery landscape in Germany

In several federal states, there are different regulations for tariff design for bridales. In Baden-Württemberg, for example, the fees will increase by 120 euros from August 1, 2024. At the same time, there are also regulations on the training allowance, which is 1200 euros in the first year and increases in the course of the training. In Bavaria, in turn, an increase in the fees is planned by 3.4% from March 1, 2025. In other regions such as Berlin and Lower Saxony, adjustments to the fees are planned, but all are bound to the respective collective agreements, which can be canceled.
