Summer time: blood donations urgently need - save life with every drop!

On June 12, 2025, the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG) calls on blood and plasma donations, since the summer months traditionally represent a challenging time for blood supply. During this time, blood is often scarce, which is of crucial importance for many vital therapies and emergency treatments. On the occasion of the upcoming world blood donation day on June 14, 2025, whose motto of the WHO "Give Blood, Give Hope: Together We Save Lives" is, emphasizes Stefan Schwartze, representative of the Federal Government, emphasizes the importance of regular blood donations.

dr. Johannes Nießen, provisional director of the BIÖG, points out that during the holiday and holiday season in summer, the number of donors often drops, which can endanger the supply situation. It is all the more important that the population is motivated to donate blood. Regular donations are indispensable, since the durability of certain blood preparations, such as platelets, is only four days.

a challenge in summer

The DRK blood donation services contribute to the public by calling up for high donation, especially in summer. Blood donors secure the care of sick and seriously injured people around the clock. These donations can be crucial about life and death. Current challenges such as holidays and large sports events often restrict the willingness to donate blood, which is why the DRK blood donation service therefore appeals to become active to maintain the security of supply with blood preparations.

In Germany, around 15,000 blood donations are required every day, with the daily requirements in federal states such as Hesse and Baden-Württemberg over 2,700 blood pans. The blood donation itself takes about 15 minutes and can save up to three lives. Interested parties are encouraged to reserve blood donation dates online, and the DRK blood donation service offers around 20 mobile blood donation dates in the region every day.

campaigns to promote the blood donation

The campaign "Donate blood. Simply make it." aims to draw the population aware of the need and importance of the blood donation. It is recommended to drink sufficiently before the donation and to treat yourself to rest after the donation. People aged 18 and over are entitled to donate without a defined maximum age limit. Women are allowed to donate whole blood four times a year, while plasma can be donated up to 60 times a year.

Further information on the blood and plasma donation is available at www.blutspenden.de/blutspended services . The World Blood Donation Day was launched by the WHO in 2004 and is the 20th time this year.

The continuing clinical necessity for blood transfusions requires that every generation of society campaigns for donating blood and realizes how crucial it is for the community. The commitment of blood donors is recognized by organizations such as the DRK who thank all donors for their valuable contribution to the rescue of tens of thousands of people.
