Forstenrieder Park: From the royal hunting ground to the green energy future!
The Forstenrieder Park, a 37 square kilometer landscape protection area southwest of Munich, can look back on an impressive story. He once served as the hunting area of the Wittelsbach royal family, where King Ludwig III. 1918 killed the last royal shirsch. Nowadays, the park is a popular recreation area for the population that offers numerous leisure opportunities such as walking, jogging and cycling. Jacques Volland, hunter and forester and chairman of the association "Friends of the Forstenrieder Park", is actively committed to the preservation of the park.
wild animals can also be found in large numbers. Rothires and wild boars have found their habitat in this green oasis. The park also houses over 40 old oaks, the protection of which is the focus of care. Thanks to the commitment of citizens, associations and nature lovers, the park was retained from the cut by planned bypass motorways and other developments. Numerous measures are planned to maintain the condition of the park and to preserve its attractiveness for future generations.
Sustainable developments in Forstenrieder Park
currently the Forstenrieder Park is facing a significant change because the preparations for the construction of six wind turbines have started. These are to be put into operation in mid-2026 and offer a capacity that will supply around 20,000 two-person households annually. The early start of construction for these wind power projects was approved by the Munich District Office, and initial felling work is already underway. The area that must be cleared before the actual construction measures is around half a hectare.
Nevertheless, the associated deforestation does not remain without compensation: After the construction phase, about 0.2 hectares per wind turbine should be reforested again, and each coated tree is replaced. In addition, compensation areas in Baierbrunn are intended to minimize the ecological effects. The operation of the wind turbines is coordinated by the Bürgerwindpark Forstenrieder Park GmbH & Co. KG, in which the citizens of the surrounding communities can also take part.
information events and local participation
To inform the population about the wind power project, five events are planned, which take place between March 11th and April 2. Among them are offers both on site in the municipalities of Baierbrunn, Neuried, Schäftlarn and Pullach as well as an online event that is limited to 500 participants.
The association "Friends of the Forstenrieder Park" also plans to set up more orientation signs in the park and to renovate the Hexenhäusl, a historic shelter for forest workers. These measures aim to further develop the park as a recreation and place of education, in which not only nature estimates nature, but also promoted understanding of ecological relationships.
Due to the ongoing activities and the upcoming wind power measures, the Forstenrieder Park will not only remain a place of relaxation, but also represent an important element of the regional energy transition.
