Drone attack on hospital in Sudan: six deaths and many injuries

Obeid, Nordkordofan, Sudan - On May 30, 2025, at least six people were killed in a suspected drone attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Obid International Hospital in Obeid, North Cordofan. The attack, which took place on Friday, also injured at least 15 more people. The human rights group Emergency Lawyers blamed the RSF for this attack, which also caused considerable damage to the main building of the hospital, which is why the services were initially discontinued. A source of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) confirmed that a second hospital was also hit in the city center.

Obeid acts as an important supply base for the army to the west, where the city of El-Fasher is under the control of the army-guided government. In El-Fasher there have been struggles between SAF and the RSF since May 2024, although international warnings of escalating violence have been pronounced. The humanitarian situation in Sudan is increasingly deteriorating.

illness and hunger in the crisis

The Ministry of Health in Khartum reported 942 new cholera infections and 25 deaths the day before. Previously, 1,177 cases and 45 deaths had already been registered. Around 90 percent of hospitals in the war zones are no longer operational, which dramatically tightens the situation. Since August 2024, over 65,000 suspected cases of cholera and at least 1,700 deaths have been reported in 12 out of 18 states.

The situation in Khartum is particularly alarming, where 7,700 cases and 185 deaths were recorded, including over 1,000 infections in children under the age of five. Jean-Nicolas Armstrong Dangelser from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has called for an increase in auxiliary measures to combat cholera outbreak. The battles in the Al-Salha District, south of Ondurman, also contributed to the spread of cholera.

The UN has reported that around 11 million people have been sold out of their houses in April 2023 since the fighting between RSF and SAF. 250,000 of them fled to Libya. In this context, 11 Sudanese refugees and a Libyan driver had to live their lives in a car accident in the desert in Libya on Friday.

civil war and violence

The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, led to thousands of dead and a humanitarian crisis. More than 14,000 people have been killed so far, and the population is on the edge of a famine. The RSF, which emerged from Arab militias, tried to take control of Al-Fasher, the last bastion of the military in Darfur. This violence not only led to physical injuries, but also produced reports on widespread sexual violence that are considered war crimes.

The attacks of the RSF on health facilities add the vulnerable in the region. Such an attack recently took place in western Darfur, where the RSF fired shots and looted a health facility, which led to the closure of the South Hospital in Al-Fasher. Doctors without borders reported that medical staff and patients were given in the hospital.

The international community is called on to provide humanitarian aid in order to relieve the devastating consequences of the conflict and to avert a dramatic humanitarian disaster. The situation in Sudan remains extremely tense and rapid action is required.
