Art for the future: Eichstätter project combines painting and sustainability!

As part of the “Art meets Sustainability” project, a colorful wall is designed in the Wiesengässchen in Eichstätt, which is intended to serve as a symbol for a desirable future. The aim of this initiative is to combine both creative and sustainable aspects. The Fairtrade control group of the city of Eichstätt launched the project, and today, on June 11, 2025, it will continue to be promoted. Students of the art didactics of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt have already developed motifs that bring local implementations closer to global sustainability goals. To implement these designs, Malter appointments are pending: on June 16, 23 and 30, and on July 7th, 14th and 21st, every Monday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The artificial management of the project takes over Dr. Florian Pfab, supported by Petia Knebel and Kerstin Muhr. The initiative is accompanied by Dr. Dagmar Kusche and Andreas Spreng from the city. When presenting the designs in front of Mayor Josef Grienberger and sponsors of the initiative, such as Obi and Volksbank Raiffeisenbank Bayern Mitte, the focus is on the exchange of sustainable practices.

sustainability in the cultural scene

Wider focus on ecological sustainability in art and cultural institutions also shows the federal cultural foundation, which has launched the "Zero" program. This promotes ecological sustainability approaches in cultural institutions through three modules: "Fund Zero" for project funding, "Akademie Zero" for further training measures and the Zero network to strengthen knowledge transfer. The program, which provides a total of 8 million euros by 2027, aims to increase awareness of climate -neutral production forms in the cultural landscape. In 2022, 25 projects from ten federal states have already been selected and funded with over 3 million euros.

It is particularly noteworthy that the upcoming events of the Zero Academy also take up the topic of sustainability, such as the academy on September 9 and 10, 2024 in Leipzig on sustainable material experiments. These approaches support the cultural workers in making responsible decisions and integrating environmentally friendly practices in everyday business.

practical approaches and best practice

In addition to these initiatives, Plant Values offers practical examples and guidelines for sustainable developments in art and culture. The focus here is on various aspects of sustainability, including the social dimension, which affects working conditions for domestic staff, freelance employees and artists. Best practices, instructions and tips for action on the subject of sustainable art companies are available to all interested parties, from art association members to artists.

This exchange of knowledge enables actors in the art and cultural scene to react specifically to challenges of sustainability. In this context, dealing with resources, CO2 emissions at events and energy and building management are central concerns that need to address.

The symbiosis of creativity and responsibility in art projects, such as that in Eichstätt, not only illustrates the need, but also the possibility of achieving positive social and ecological effects. The ongoing projects below are an impressive sign of the change that the art scene strives to create a more sustainable future.
