A million balcony power plants: Solar revolution starts in Germany!

In Germany, there are now around one million balcony power plants, also known as plug -in solar devices. This impressive number has doubled within a year, which continues to increase the popularity of these mini solar systems. The data comes from the market master data register and estimates of the Federal Association of Solar Economics (BSW) and show that the domestic solar systems make a significant contribution to the energy transition.

The one millionth balcony power plant is already in operation according to BSW general manager Carsten Körnig. These small solar systems are often mounted on balconies and have a connection performance of 800 watts. In the sunshine, feed your energy generated via a socket into the home network. Surpluses can also be fed into the network free of charge, whereby devices with their own power storage are not considered plug -in solar devices.

growth and distribution of the balcony power plants

According to current figures, the market master data register showed 975,583 plants on Tuesday. Around 20,000 of these devices are closed. The BSW sees no end of growth: more and more people can imagine installing a balcony power plant. In particular, the high electricity prices have contributed to the popularity of this technology since the beginning of the Ukraine War.

The distribution varies regionally. Most of the standing systems can be found in North Rhine-Westphalia with 194,077, followed by Bavaria with 148,284 and Lower Saxony with 127,879. In contrast, very few plants in Hamburg (7.202) and Bremen (5.118) are registered, which is due to a lower density in city states, since there are less suitable installation locations available.

Latest regulations and technical developments

In May 2024, the Federal Government brought improvements for balcony PV as part of the solar package I. The significant changes include the simplified registration of balcony power plants in the market master data register and the registration with the network operator. In addition, the balcony power plants can also be operated without calibrated two -style meters, and old backward -turning meters are temporarily tolerated.

With the new regulation, the installation of plug -in solar devices with a maximum output of 800 watts is permitted. These mini solar systems consist of one or two solar modules, are about 1 x 1.70 meters tall and cost between 500 and 3,000 euros, depending on the model. The amortization period is on average under ten years, while the service life of the devices is between 20 and 30 years.

legal framework and use

private individuals can install the devices themselves, but must observe some security standards and obtain approval from the landlord. The currently registered systems have a maximum installed total output of around 0.9 gigawatts, while in Germany a total of over 100 gigawatts from all solar systems are available.

According to report, the image of the inner cities will in future change significantly due to the increasing number of these balcony power plants. The infrastructure will have to adapt to the increasing numbers so that the potential of these technologies can be fully exploited.
