Russia attacks again: at least 12 deaths at nightly air strikes!

Sumy, Ukraine - War in Ukraine is currently experiencing a renewed escalation. According to tagesschau.de , the Ukrainian Defense Minister Umjerow has accused Russia of delaying negotiations instead of being ready for real conversations. These allegations are not without reason, since Moscow attacked several regions of Ukraine with air strikes and drones at night. In the past few days, Russia has carried out the worst air strikes since the beginning of the conflict, in which almost 300 drones and around 70 rockets were used, which led to at least twelve fatalities and dozens.

The air strikes in particular concerned the Schytomyr region, where two children and a young person died, as well as the capital Kiev, in which at least four people were killed. Attacks in Mykolajiw also led to a death and several injuries. The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj blamed Russia for this terror and demanded more pressure from the West to bring Moscow to reason.

In the shadow of this escalation, a bright spot was recorded: the greatest prisoner exchange since the beginning of the war has been completed, in which 1,000 people were released. This was part of the first direct negotiations since 2022, which took place on May 16 in Istanbul. Some of the people who were released have been captured since 2022.

Selenskyj emphasized that all prisoners have to be brought back, while the Russian Vice Defense Minister expressed hope that the exchange could create a cheaper atmosphere for future peace negotiations. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether and when such negotiations on a ceasefire will take place.

Russia is also held responsible for the destruction of numerous infrastructure in Ukraine. The situation in the Saporischschja region, which is occupied by Russia, is particularly worrying, where 457 places are without electricity and around 600,000 households are affected. This is done in a context in which Ukraine has to struggle with high losses on both sides and international organizations, such as the UN, have an alarming status of over 13,000 civilians killed and more than 30,000 injuries.

The Ukrainian armed forces have meanwhile carried out a secret operation called "Spider Netz", which may have contributed to reducing the number of destroyed Russian fighter planes to 12 after 41 damaged aircraft was mentioned. Russian attacks in Balaklija continue to lead to tragedies such as the death of civilians. Ukraine remains strongly dependent on international help, especially from the United States, but the support of which is not guaranteed due to political upheavals under President Trump.

The front line continues to extend from the Black Sea coast and Cherson to Donetsk and Bachmuth to the Russian border at Kupjansk. The hope of peace negotiations in spring 2025 remains, while the risk of a further war of wear is growing. In view of the ongoing battles, the international community remains challenged to show their solidarity with Ukraine and put pressure on Russia to find a sustainable solution.
