Friedenheimer Bridge in Munich: Refurbishment finally completed!

The renovation of the Friedenheimer Bridge in Munich has been successfully completed. According to a notification of the building department on May 28, 2025, the work was completed half a year later than originally planned. The bridge, which leads over the highly frequented S-Bahn station Hirschgarten, was significantly burdened by daily traffic, so that a comprehensive renewal of the lane and walking track transitions made of steel as well as the repair of the bridge sections and components were necessary. Traffic restrictions on the bridge have not existed since the beginning of May 2025.

Originally, the work had to last until December 2024, but in February 2025 the completion was corrected to May 2025. During the renovation phase, there were sections and changed traffic tours, with pedestrians and cyclists being able to pass the bridge, while drivers had to expect traffic disorders. Public transport, in particular bus line 62 and the S-Bahn stop Hirschgarten, were not affected, which is an important relief for the commuters.

Current traffic and construction site development in Munich

The city of Munich provides information about various construction sites and traffic restrictions that currently influence the traffic situation in several districts. For example, Stadtwerke Munich on Isartalstrasse in Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt will carry out work on the supply network, which will probably result in restrictions in the sidewalk and road area until the end of July. Although parking spaces are eliminated, car traffic, foot and bike traffic can continue to pass.

In Pasing-Obermenzing, there are restrictions in the road area on Josef-Felder-Straße due to the extension of the U5. Here the roadway is reduced in both directions in each case, so that access to the Pasing Arcades is now via Offenbachstrasse. In addition, foot and cycling development is not affected, which is similar in other areas, for example at Landshuter Allee or in the road construction work in Neuhausen. There, foot and bike traffic is diverted or can continue to be passed past the construction site.

traffic load and counting methods

The city of Munich continuously records the traffic situation. Traffic quantities show the traffic loads in Munich for individual roads and are based on around 500 manual individual counts at nodes and cross sections. These counts take place regularly on typical working days to determine the average traffic flows. The results reflect the average working traffic and also take into account the heavy traffic, which is recorded separately. This includes truck cars over 3.5 tons and semitrailers, which continue to represent important factors for traffic planning in the city.

Overall, the current situation shows that despite the challenges of construction sites and traffic restrictions, in particular the renovation of the Friedenheimer Bridge, the city of Munich is actively working on the improvement of the infrastructure and maintains the flow of traffic in the best possible way. It is important for residents and commuters to be informed about the developments in order to be able to plan their daily paths accordingly.
