Munich wants Olympics: 66% of the citizens are for it!

A current survey on the occasion of Munich's possible Olympic acquisition shows that the majority of the population in the Bavarian capital supports a termination of the Summer Olympics. According to the results of a survey carried out by RIM Marktforschung GmbH, around 66% of the Munich residents support the games, which is a slight increase in comparison to previous surveys. Only 31% reject an application, while about 3% have no opinion. Ten days before the city council meeting, in which the concept is advised, many consider the possibility of an Olympic acquisition optimistic.

among the respondents, the younger age groups from 18 to 34 years are particularly strong for the application, with about 80% of this group expressing their approval. 71% of 35 to 49-year-olds also support the application. The approval decreases with increasing age, but remains remarkably high for 59% of 50 to 64 year olds and 48% for over 66 year olds. Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) sees a good signal in the majority of the positive answers.

reasons for and against the application

The support for an Olympic application is supported by various aspects. The greatest motives for supporters include the economic and tourist benefits (32%), followed by a desired image gain for the city (22%). Other positive aspects are improvements in infrastructure and local public transport (14%) as well as the possibilities for creating new attractions (9%). An essential part of the support is also the existing Olympic infrastructure (8%).

However, there are also important arguments against an application. The greatest concerns affect the potentially high costs that lead 31% of those surveyed. Other concerns include the expected crowds (17%) and the overload of the transport infrastructure (14%). These concerns are not unfounded, as the experiences of other countries show that the costs for the Olympic Games often exceed income. For example, in connection with the Olympic Games in Paris, which take place in 2024, the cost of 7.7 billion euros is expected to be pointed out. Sports economists often see a lower economic effect than originally expected.

economic considerations

In Paris, a total impact of 10.7 billion euros is estimated, which is to be generated by an increase in tourism, jobs and investments. Nevertheless, there are voices that warn of an euphoria. Studies show irrefutable that an increased number of jobs is created for the Olympic Games, which are often only temporary. In the past, many countries have experienced high financial losses from such major events, which could also strengthen skepticism in Munich. In this context, it is important that Munich also includes existing sports facilities in the planning and may work with other cities to minimize the costs and the risk.

Next Wednesday, the Munich city council will advise on the further procedure for the application for the Summer Olympics. The survey results are a clear indication that the majority of the city population has a positive attitude to the application and this should be taken into account in the discussion.
