Oberhausen, Deutschland - On June 6, 2025, Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst in Oberhausen opened the most modern “e-food camp” in Europe. This new warehouse belongs to the online supermarket Picnic and represents a "robotized" fulfillment center. The impressive storage space of 50,000 square meters corresponds to about seven soccer fields. The investment costs for this innovative project amount to 150 million euros and are to supply food with food (NRW) every week.
The new fulfillment center can expect up to 1,000 new jobs in the Ruhr area. Oberhausen's mayor Daniel Schranz emphasized the positive future prospects at the opening and underlined the importance of the center for the region. These robots move along 21 kilometers of conveyor technology, which was specially developed for fully automated storage and transport. A tailor-made software platform developed by 100 Picnic engineers over two years coordinates the robot movements in real time. The German supermarket chain Edeka holds 35 percent of Picnic and delivers most of the food.
