Night of the open churches: Pentecostal in Berlin and Brandenburg!

On Pentecost Sunday, June 8, 2025, around 60 worship houses in Berlin and Brandenburg open their doors to the public as part of the 23rd night of the open churches. This festivity, which is celebrated as the "birthday of the church", aims to promote spiritual life and the community. The program of this special night comprises a variety of activities, from Bible readings to services to musical performances and art installations. The overall offer is described by the ecumenical Council of Berlin-Brandenburg as "from stream to bratwurst", which illustrates the wide range of events.

A highlight of the night is the vernissage of the multimedia room installation "Luise falls a stone from the heart" by Eva von Schirach, which takes place in the Luisen Church in Berlin-Charlottenburg from 7 p.m. If you are interested in the spirituality of the church room, you can take part in a "mystalist church tour" in the St. Hedwigs Cathedral in Berlin-Mitte from 10:15 p.m. Gospel and spiritual evenings are also offered in the independent Evangelical Lutheran Kreuzkirche in Cottbus from 9 p.m.

Diverse program for all age groups

Some churches start their program in the afternoon. The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Berlin-Kreuzberg, the village church of Wegendorf in Märkisch-Oderland and the St. Michael Church in Woltersdorf (Oder-Spree) invite you to various activities early on. In addition, visitors in the St. Nicolai Church in Oranienburg and the St. Michael Church in Woltersdorf can climb the towers and take the opportunity to spend time with friends and family with a great view.

For those interested in film and culture there is a film evening in the Evangelical Church in Burg in the Spreewald with the documentary "With us it is called Hanka", which stimulates thought. These events not only offer entertainment, but also a platform for conversations about faith and community.

traditions and customs to Pentecost

The celebrations at Pentecost have a deep cultural and spiritual meaning. Special customs, such as the implementation of Pentecostal services outdoors, promote the community. An example of this is the ecumenical service in Frankfurt am Römerberg, which takes place on June 9, 2025. The tradition of decorating Pentecost fountain with birch leaves and colorful ribbons also originated in the appreciation of water as a lifelong source. This custom is particularly known in Erbach in the Odenwald.

The diverse customs reflect the regional traditions that are characterized by church importance. While some solemnly decorate the Pentecost, others decorate their houses with birch branches or produce wooden pigeons. These lively rituals give the Pentecost festival an additional dimension and combine believers in common joy.

This year, the Night of Open Churches promises to offer an exciting and enriching experience for all generations that give space to both faith and cultural diversity.
