Berlin starts electromobility offensive: New depot for e-buses!

The transport transition has gained momentum in Germany, and a prime example of this is the construction of a new electric bus depot by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). How Golem.de reports, the depot will be a central part of the strategy to convert the capital's bus fleet to zero-emission drives.

Overall, electromobility in local public transport is experiencing a remarkable upswing. At the end of 2022, hybrid and electric buses already made up 2.4 percent of the total bus fleet in Germany, which amounts to around 54,000 vehicles. This trend is not only evident in Berlin, but also in many other cities where transport companies are pushing ahead with fleet conversion. There are currently 1,884 buses with electrified drives in use, with battery-operated buses making up the majority with 1,617 vehicles EnBW.

The challenges of the transition

Golem.de brings up an interesting point: switching to electric buses not only requires a higher investment, but also the creation of a suitable charging infrastructure. A 12 meter long electric bus costs around two and a half times as much as a conventional diesel bus. Large investments in the modernization of depots and charging infrastructure are therefore essential.

However, the federal government has taken measures to support this transformation. Purchase bonuses, subsidies and tax breaks are available to help transport companies. More than half of the electric buses currently in use were purchased in the last two years, which shows that the trend is clearly moving towards emission-free mobility.

A forward-looking step for Berlin

With its new depot, the BVG not only plans to accommodate new electric buses, but also to support the necessary infrastructure required for daily use. This project is a step in the right direction to make the city not only more environmentally friendly, but also more livable. Sustainable public transport is extremely important for air quality and the general well-being of Cologne's population.

The road to the full integration of electric vehicles in local public transport is still long, but Berlin will certainly take a pioneering role with its new depot. The market also informs about the possibility of users changing their cookie settings on websites to gain access to personalized content, which is an interesting option for many.

In summary, Berlin is setting a good example. It will be exciting to see how the use of electric buses develops and which other cities will follow suit.
