Berlin swimming pools draw positive conclusions despite fewer summer guests!
The Berliner Bäder-Betriebe (BBB) looks back on the 2025 outdoor pool season, which kicked off on April 27th, with mixed feelings. Around 760,000 guests found relaxation in a wide variety of pools, including the popular Wannsee lido. But compared to the previous year, there are around 110,000 fewer visitors, which makes the balance appear somewhat clouded. Nevertheless, those responsible have a “cautiously positive” view of the season overall, as in-berlin-brandenburg.com reports.
The changeable weather has put a damper on the popularity of outdoor pools this year. Despite this, there were over 60,000 visitors a day on hot weekends. In cooler temperatures, many sport swimmers were particularly popular. The security situation must also be highlighted: The BBB CEO Dr. Johannes Kleinsorg describes the summer as “satisfactory” as no serious incidents were recorded. By the end of July, 119 stay-at-home orders had been issued – an increase on the 104 last year.
Innovations and security
New this year is the adjusted entry system, designed to provide visitors with a smoother experience. Online tickets and a time slot system are now an integral part so that capacity utilization can be better regulated. A occupancy light makes it possible to see how full the pools are at any time - guests with online tickets can also gain entry when the display is "red", which, according to the BBB, ensures more transparency.
In addition, cooperation with the police and external security companies was increased. Video surveillance at entrances and exits remains in place at four locations and the ID requirement, which has been in force since July 2023, contributes to quick identification in the event of an eventuality. “We have demonstrated a good knack for increasing safety in our pools,” emphasizes Kleinsorg.
Sports and leisure activities
Another highlight of this year's season are the supervised sports activities, which are offered in various outdoor pools in cooperation with Sportjugend Berlin. These supervised activities take place in Pankow, Kreuzberg and Neukölln and offer children and young people the opportunity to do sports. The establishment of online ticket sales has proven to be a great success: by 2024, one in three guests will buy their ticket online.
A look at the feedback shows that users value the stability and reliability of the online shop. The ticket offices in five summer pools only sell tickets until 10 a.m., which further encourages the switch to digital options. It remains to be seen how visitor numbers will develop at the end of the season, but the journey has begun and the Berlin baths are optimistic. Other large pools can also be found in the attractions such as the Wannsee lido and the Prinzenbad Kreuzberg, which are once again very popular this year.
Overall, it can be said that despite the weather-related challenges and the slight decline in visitor numbers, Berlin's spa businesses are on a solid path to not only offer existing bathers a relaxing time, but also to attract new visitors. So it remains to be hoped that the coming summer weeks will bring numerous hours of sunshine and satisfied visitors.
