Look in the past: the new Archeology Center in Berlin opens!
A very special place is being built in the heart of Berlin: the Archeology Center Petri Berlin. Already today, on June 19, 2025, a look behind the scenes of this innovative project will be taken. The center will open on June 24, 2023, and admission is free until June 29. It is particularly in this place that it was built at the site of a former Latin school, which is considered the oldest place of learning in the city. History and modern architecture meet here in an impressive way.
What can visitors expect? The Archeology Center is an interactive experience that focuses on the city of Cölln, which was founded in 1237. Archaeologists were able to expose the foundations of this school and remains of the Petrikirche among the ruins. This gives valuable insights into the beginnings of Berlin and its development in the Middle Ages. The cost of this archaeological jewelry is around 35 million euros and offer visitors the opportunity to experience current discoveries up close.
an interactive experience for everyone
The center has set itself the goal of conveying a deep understanding of the archaeological heritage of Berlin. The steps of archaeological work can be traced directly through glass workshops and open magazines. It is not just a museum, but an active center in which children and adults can interact. In particular, the exhibition "Discover Archeology" inspires with interactive elements, tactile objects and hands -on stations.
In the basement, visitors can expect a fascinating insight into the underground city history of Berlin and the foundations of the Petrikirche. Here you can find the bones of 475 deceased in a specially created ossarium. The details about their lives are documented in a death book and create a uniquely personal connection to the historical finds.
Current research up close
Another highlight is the possibility to take part in current research. Visitors can not only watch, but also participate in the action. The process of determination is demonstrated on the first floor, while the collections of the Museum of Pre- and Early History are exhibited on the third and fourth floor. Here it becomes clear how important the preservation and presentation of this finds is and what importance you have for the cultural heritage of Berlin.
Special formats are offered for schools to inspire young people for archaeological methods. Accompanying programs provide insights into the processes and challenges that archaeologists have to master every day. For children there is even an interactive Petri game that enables them to become archaeologists themselves and to playfully discover finds. The Archeology Center Petri Berlin is therefore not only a place of learning and discovering, but also a living space for science and research. It will be exciting to observe how this innovative concept proves itself and suggests the curiosity of people to deal with the roots of their city. A real gain for everyone who is interested in the history of Berlin!
