traffic safety and statistics

Security in road traffic is a central topic for society. The Statistics of the Federal Statistical Office offers comprehensive, current and nationwide comparable data on the traffic safety situation. This is particularly important to justify measures in legislation, traffic education, road construction and in vehicle technology. The aim of the road traffic accident statistics is to show the structures of the accident and the dependencies between accident -determining factors.

In 2023 there were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in Germany. Most of these accidents concerned property damage, while the number of accidents with personal injury remained at a similar level as in the 1950s. The Current data analysis also shows that the traffic fatalities in Germany have been significantly reduced since 1970, in 2023 a total of 2,839 people died in road traffic.

a comprehensive picture of traffic accidents

The goals of traffic safety statistics are diverse and not only include the recording of accidents with personal injury, but also from property damage and dangerous goods. In the context of traffic accidents, there are insufficient distance, non -adapted speed and drive under the influence of alcohol frequent causes that can lead to devastating consequences.

The increasing number of victims, including cyclists and e-bike users, is particularly worrying. The data from 2023 show that around 23,744 people were injured or killed on e-bikes-an increase compared to the previous year. The need to record these trends and develop measures to improve traffic safety is undisputed and remains a central concern of transport policy in Germany.

The tragic incident in Tuttlingen underlines the urgency of rethinking the road traffic regulations and getting closer to the aim of “vision zero”, which aims not to record any road dead until 2050.
