Traffic chaos in Warnemünde: S-Bahn timetable causes trouble!
The summer of 2025 is faced with a major challenge for traffic. According to the Greens in the Rostock citizens, the location could be affected by a serious traffic attack, since Deutsche Bahn renovates the S-Bahn line between the main train station and Warnemünde until the end of November. This work means that the trains only drive every 30 minutes, which is a serious restriction, which is sharply criticized by Felix Winter, the Greens parliamentary group leader. Usually the S-Bahn runs in a 10 or even 7.5-minute cycle.
In order to temporarily defuse the situation, the railway plans to increase the beat at the end of July and early August to a 10-minute cycle. Nevertheless, Winter fears that many commuters and tourists will switch to the car due to the long waiting times to the S-Bahn, which also contains the already tense traffic situation in Warnemünde.
claims and solutions
The Greens therefore call for replacement traffic from Deutsche Bahn and an express line that drives from the main train station to Warnemünde and only stops at stations that have no tram connection. In the meantime, the MV Verkehrsgesellschaft refers to the Ministry of Transport to get an urgency application that must be approved by the citizens.
Tourists could be particularly affected, warns Matthias Fromm, the Rostock tourism director. He expresses concerns that the limited S-Bahn cycle could lead to more guests to travel by car. In Warnemünde there are not only numerous construction sites, but also a lack of parking spaces, which makes the traffic situation considerably more difficult during events
public transport and alternatives
In order to reduce the pressure on road traffic, Rostock and Warnemünde offer holidaymakers free use of local transport with the guest card. In addition, Rostocker Straßenbahn AG is planning to use more buses in Warnemünde for 2025. Bus line 36 should run every 10 minutes and line 37 every 20 minutes. For passengers from Mecklenburger Allee in the city center, a journey time of around 45 minutes can be expected.
In parallel to these developments, there are also longer closures on the Rostock S-Bahn. The main route should not be accessible between March 7 and March 21, 2025 due to the commissioning of new signals and the renewal of soft and tracks in the Bramow area. A rail replacement with buses is set up during this time.In addition, the railway announces further restrictions from April 29 to October 29, 2025, in which even a half -hourly cycle on the line between Rostock Hbf and Warnemünde can be offered. For a large number of travelers, bypasses in the main train station will then be necessary, which is further extended.
These temporary construction sites and the need to accept detours are symptoms of an old and often overloaded mobility system. Industry representatives such as the federal government are therefore also calling for overarching solutions for local public transport in order to achieve long -term improvements and a sustainable mobility transition. The proposal includes, among other things, a nationwide 365-euro annual ticket to create further incentives to use public transport that could be considered a real alternative in many cities.
Overall, the coming months for Rostock and Warnemünde will be decisive when it comes to the traffic situation. It remains to be seen whether the measures required by the Greens and the higher cycle times will provide relief. During this transition period, the cooperation between the transport companies, politics and the citizens is more important than ever.
