Opening of the Dahlem Center for Linguistics: Interactive insights on June 20th
Habelschwerdter Allee 45, 14195 Berlin, Deutschland - The Free University of Berlin invites you to the ceremonial opening of the Dahlem Center for Linguistics (DCL). The event will take place on June 20, 2025 at 4 p.m. in the lecture hall 1a of the rust arbor, Habelschwerdter Allee 45. Die Veranstaltung wird für alle Interessierten aus Wissenschaft, Medien und Öffentlichkeit zugänglich sein. The aim of the DCL is to bundle the university's linguistic expertise in a joint organizational structure to promote interdisciplinary research in the field of linguistics.
The research focuses of the DCL include system linguistics, multilingualism, language acquisition, language in social contexts and neurolinguistics. A central element of the opening will be the support of young scientists, including a poster session for doctoral students in FU Linguistics.
Central program items of the opening
dr. Bert Remijsen from the University of Edinburgh will work as a guest scientist at the DCL. The research stay was made possible by an ERC synergy grant. He will present a lecture on the language of the South Sudan Ethnia of the Shilluk, the descriptive analysis of which forms an important part of his academic work. Dr. Remijsen is already researching intensely on suprase-mental systems in western nilotic languages and is particularly interested in the phonology and morphology of the Shilluk language. The support of his projects is carried out, among other things, by the emphasis.
In addition, a workshop with linguistic perspectives takes place in African languages. Dr. Mandana Seyfeddinipur will report on the documentation gaps in African languages, while Prof. Dr. Malte Zimmermann will give an insight into the West African languages Akan and Hausa. Prof. Dr. Uli Reich will present his research on the prosody in Wolof.
opening ceremony and involved
The official opening of the Dahlem Center for Linguistics is carried out by prominent representatives of the university: Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler, President of the Free University, Prof. Dr. Michael Gamper, Dean of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities, as well as Prof. Dr. Ferdinand von Mengden, spokesman for the Dcl.
The DCL is therefore in a greater context of the promotion and deepening of understanding with regard to African languages and cultures. For example, the University of Hamburg offers a master's degree in African studies, which aims at the further development of knowledge in African languages and cultures. The students can specialize in various profiles, including "Applied African Linguistics" or "Linguistic Analysis and Language Documentation", which underlines the increasing relevance of linguistics in the academic landscape.
The developments at the Dahlem Center for Linguistics are therefore not only a significant step for the Free University of Berlin, but also a contribution to global linguistic research.
Fu Berlin reports about the opening of the DCL, while Edinburgh Profiles Additional information about Dr. Remijsen and his research interests. Other aspects of studying in African studies can be found on the website of the University of Hamburg
