FC Bayern Munich: 60 years ago with an 8-0 win in the Bundesliga!

Today, FC Bayern Munich looks back on a special day in its history: on June 26, 1965, the club was promoted to the Regionalliga Süd after two years of hard work. With a brilliant 8-0 win against Tennis Borussia Berlin in the historic Olympic Stadium in Berlin, the team secured the longed-for place in the Bundesliga. This historic encounter attracted around 15,000 spectators, most of whom were dressed in red and white and loudly supported their team.

Bayern only needed a draw to secure promotion, but the team led by coach Zlatko “Tschik” Čajkovski had other plans. With an impressive performance, led by Rainer Ohlhauser, who scored four goals, and Gerd Müller, who contributed another goal, they left no doubt about victory. Ohlhauser had already attracted attention in the 1964/65 season with 42 goals in 36 games, making him the top scorer in the Regionalliga South. He began his career at 1. FC Dilsberg and developed through positions at SV Sandhausen and then on to FC Bayern, where he took the step into professional football in 1961.

The long road to the Bundesliga

The path to promotion was anything but easy. The DFB had refused FC Bayern admission to the Bundesliga in 1963, which those responsible for the club did not want to accept. Despite an extensive complaint that they submitted to the DFB, the decision remained unchanged. Bayern faced the challenge of building a new, strong team in the Regionalliga South, which they achieved impressively with an impressive record of 55 points and a goal difference of 146:32.

Bayern's 1965 promotion round began with a 2-0 home win against the same team that would now be their undoing. After a narrow defeat in Saarbrücken, the path to great success was paved when they faced Tennis Borussia Berlin again on the last match day and finally won. After the final whistle, the entire team celebrated euphorically with the fans on the pitch, and the return to Munich became an unforgettable event with thousands of supporters at the airport.

The fulfillment of a dream

President Wilhelm Neudecker announced that the team would plan a celebration on July 10, 1965 with a march around Lake Tegernsee to properly celebrate the promotion. Rainer Ohlhauser was not only very popular with the fans, but also left his mark on sports. In another four years at Bayern, he played 160 Bundesliga games and scored 64 goals before moving to Grasshopper Club Zurich in 1970.

The rise story of FC Bayern Munich is more than just a chapter in the club's history; it stands for the tireless fight for recognition and achievement. This marked the culmination of an era that led FC Bayern on a path to success that continues to this day. A day to celebrate and remember that fans will talk about for a long time.
