Karl-Marx-Straße: Renovation finally completed after 15 years!

It's done: After what feels like an eternity of over 15 years, the construction work on Karl-Marx-Straße in Berlin-Neukölln has finally been completed. District mayor Martin Hikel (SPD) celebrated the opening today in a colorful post on Instagram. This extensive renovation sets a new record in Berlin, as it took even longer than the construction of the BER, which is notorious for its delays. Originally everything was supposed to be finished in 2021, but as we know, nothing came of it. The news is now all the more pleasing that the path to relaxation on the streets of Neukölln is clear.

The construction work was not only a ghostwriter for contemporary history, it was also a logistical challenge. During the renovation phase, subway line 7 and several underground lines were renewed. However, drivers now have to put up with one less lane in each direction. But there are also bright spots: a new bike lane ensures that cyclists are now safer on the road. The footpaths have also been upgraded and offer more space and an improved quality of stay - a real benefit for all users of the street.

New remodeling plans

But that's not the end of the story: new construction work to redesign Karl-Marx-Platz is already being planned from autumn 2025. These are due to be completed next year and thus represent a further step towards urban quality of life. The optimized traffic routes and the new ambience will change a lot and could further enhance the district.

In the meantime, residents were informed about the construction work. From June 10th to 13th, 2025 there was a complete closure of Karl-Marx-Strasse between Fuldastrasse and Weichselstrasse. Diversions via Sonnenallee and Hermannstrasse were recommended to make motor traffic as smooth as possible. During construction, the properties in this area were only accessible on foot or by bike, which was certainly an adjustment for some.

Big developments in Berlin

What makes Berlin special is the constant change. In 2025, the city will be characterized by exciting construction projects that will not only modernize the urban infrastructure, but also create new living space. These include projects such as the Dockyard Waterfront Office in Friedrichshain and the planned new office building in Wedding, both of which are scheduled to be completed this year. The Ostkreuz Campus and the Upbeat Berlin, an impressive high-rise in Europacity, are also part of these developments and give the city a fresh face.

So it remains exciting, because Berlin's change knows no boundaries - quite the opposite. With each new project, the city's image becomes more diverse and the quality of life for its residents continues to improve. The usual streets of Neukölln are now getting their money's worth. So let’s stay excited to see what other positive changes the future will bring!
