Criticism of Kretschmann: Greens in the dispute over Jette Nietzard and ACAB sweater

In a passionate discussion within the Greens, Berlin MP Katrin Schmidberg, Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann and the Green top candidate Cem Özdemir, sharply criticized. The background is the request of the two, the boss of the Green Youth, Jette Nietzard, to move to party exit. Schmidberger said on the X platform that it was horrified and questioned who had the right to decide on the resignation of members. She emphasized that conflicts within the party should be discussed and clarified.

The discussion about Nietzard's behavior was triggered by a controversial photo on which she wore a sweater with the inscription "Acab", which stands for "All Cops Are Bastards". Kretschmann and Özdemir had criticized Nietzard for this wearing and suggested an exit. Schmidberger also does not agree to Nietzard's behavior, but pleads for a different way of dealing with such situations. She points out that the green youth within the party had a different role than the established top politicians and demands that statements such as those should be refrained from Kretschmann and Özdemir.

warning about right narrative

With her criticism, Schmidberger also warns that such public statements could heat a debate from which the AfD would benefit. In this context, she reminds of Kretschmann's own past in the radical left -wing scene and as a Maoist to indicate the contradiction of his criticism. Andreas Otto, a realo-greener from Berlin, did not leave Schmidberger's words uncommented and used her criticism to shoot the Berlin State Association of the Greens.

Schmidberger himself, who has been a member of the Berlin House of Representatives since 2011, is political for a lifetime. It is committed to social housing, the preservation of social living space and for a stricter assertion ban. In addition, she was involved in the enforcement of the Berlin rental cover and is committed to the privatization of public properties. It not only contributes to the political discussion within the party, but also has a significant impact on housing policy in Berlin.

Green youth in change

The Green Youth, which traditionally sees itself as the social wing of the party and has around 16,000 members, is reorganized. Dzienus and Sarah-Lee Heinrich have announced that they will give the lead after two years. Her successors, Svenja Appuhn and Katharina Stolla, both 25 years old, want to focus on climate protection and discuss the future orientation of the Green Youth.

The persistent debates within the Greens reflect not only the internal party challenges, but also the pressure from outside, which is on the party. The situation once again shows the tensions between traditional policies and the demands of a younger, dynamic electorate.
