Light magic at the Reichstag: 30 years of Christo and Jeanne-Claude celebrate!
Reichstagsgebäude, Berlin, Deutschland - On June 9, 2025, an important art event will take place in Berlin: On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the iconic coverage of the Reichstag by the artist couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude there is a spectacular light projection. This will be seen on the west facade of the historic building every day from Monday evening and lasts until June 20, 2025. The illumination is to be admired from darkness, i.e. between 9:30 p.m. and 1 a.m.
Berliner Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) is expected to open the event. Preparations for this art project started a few days before the start. For this purpose, a total of 24 high -performance projectors were set up on three 3 to 3.5 meter high scaffolding towers, which are 80 meters from the Reichstag building. The costs for the entire staging amount to around half a million euros, which are financed by the foundation of Christo and Jeanne-Claude as well as by Roland Specker and Peter Schwenkow.
an important cultural heritage
The covering of the Reichstag, which took place in 1995, was the result of a remarkable process: Christo and Jeanne-Claude had worked on this idea for a total of 24 years. Approval for the ambitious project was granted after a 70-minute debate in the Bundestag. With 100,000 square meters of Silbrig-glossed film, the 14-day campaign attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors and the image of the "Wrapped Reichstag" went around the world.
A documentation exhibition that includes around 400 exhibits is reminiscent of this extraordinary art project. This includes 66 original drawings and collages, a scale model, 225 photographs as well as original documents and pieces. This collection is to be permanently presented in the Reichstag building at the presidential level in order to be open to the public.
artistic homage and financing
The light projection in Berlin is a tribute to Christo, who died in 2020, and his partner Jeanne-Claude, who died in 2009. They developed the idea to cover the Reichstag as early as 1971. The organizers have not supported tax money; The event is therefore free of charge for the audience.
On June 13th, Christo would have celebrated his 90th birthday, which gives this event an additional emotional value. The illumination of the west facade of the Reichstag will span a silvery -shining robe around the monumental building and thus revive the memories of the artist couple, which is characterized.
