On Saturday afternoon there was a serious accident on Märkische Allee in Berlin-Marzahn, in which seven people were injured, including two seriously injured and one person whose life was in danger. The cause of the accident is currently unclear, but a van initially collided with another car before skidding, hitting the center island and finally rolling into oncoming traffic. There the van crashed into several other vehicles. According to rbb24 it is suspected that a person was thrown from the vehicle, but this could not be confirmed.
The fire department was on site with 53 emergency services to deal with the situation. Due to initial reports of several injuries, a rescue helicopter was requested. As a result, the injured, some of whom freed themselves from the vehicles, were taken to nearby hospitals - six of them on an outpatient basis, while one was treated as an inpatient. The injured include a 50-year-old man and a woman between 40 and 50 who suffered facial injuries. Märkische Allee will remain closed until the traces of the accident have been removed and further expert investigations are carried out.
The deployment of the rescue workers
The fire brigade ensured that any leaking operating materials were contained and that fire protection was guaranteed. After initial medical care and rescue work had been completed, the police took over the scene. Images of the accident show a badly battered van and crushed vehicle parts spread across the road.
Statistical classification of traffic accidents
In order to understand and minimize such incidents, the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Department carries out monthly road traffic accident statistics. These not only serve to collect data on traffic safety, but also as a basis for measures in legislation, traffic education and road construction. All accidents that occur on public roads and paths are recorded by the police and included in the statistics. However, accidents with only property damage or minor injuries are only partially reported, which affects those affected and general road safety Statistics Berlin-Brandenburg.
Märkische Allee will continue to be closed at the time of reporting due to clean-up work and the necessary expert investigations. Overall, it remains to be seen what measures will be derived from the accident analysis in order to further reduce the dangers in road traffic. Road safety is an issue that affects us all.
