Shots in the café: man injured in Kreuzberg – police on duty!

In the last few days and weeks, a tragic incident in Berlin-Kreuzberg has caused excitement and concern among the public. On Friday, a 26-year-old man was shot in a café on Bergmannstrasse and his life is currently in danger. Witnesses report an explosive situation: The man was approached by two men and two women before he was hit with several shots in the hip and legs. The seriously injured man was immediately taken to a hospital, where doctors are busy with the operation. The clinic is being secured by police forces while the search for the fleeing suspects is already underway. RBB24 reports that Bergmannstrasse was completely closed during the entire police operation.

Such incidents are not just isolated cases. Violent clashes appear to be increasing in Berlin. Violent crime is constantly in the news, and although it accounts for less than 4% of crimes recorded by the police, it has a major impact on people's sense of security. Around 217,000 violent crimes were registered in 2024 - the highest number since 2007. According to the Statista Experts noted that the number of violent crimes has been increasing again since 2021, possibly due to economic uncertainties and social stress.

Another incident – similarities and concerns

As a similar incident shows, feelings of insecurity increase the risk of further acts of violence. On the night of Wednesday, November 27th, a 31-year-old was gunned down on the corner of Gneisenaustraße and Nostitzstraße, which led to a massive police presence. The victim, accompanied by his brother, got into an argument with two unknown people and died a short time later in hospital. Here too, the police were on duty with their service weapons drawn and securing the area. MAZ explained that security measures in the hospital were increased due to the use of firearms, and no other patients were treated except for life-threatening cases.

The number of violent crimes in Germany is a topic that always causes debate. A survey from May 2024 showed that 94% of Germans see violence and aggression against people from politics, police and rescue services as a major problem. The ongoing psychological stress resulting from the corona pandemic could represent an additional factor influencing violent behavior. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), a significant increase in acts of violence against emergency services has been observed, which indicates dangerous developments.

The events in Berlin-Kreuzberg and similar incidents raise important questions. How safe do citizens feel in the capital? And what measures are necessary to improve the situation? One thing is certain: in times like these, it is more important than ever to be vigilant and strengthen the community to prevent such tragedies in the future.
