Selenskyj urges sanctions - Russia continues to defy peace!
Kamjanez-Podilskyj, Ukraine - On May 31, 2025, Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj will meet with the US senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal. During this meeting, Selenskyj confirms his hope for sharper sanctions against Russia and thanks for the support of a new US sanction initiative, which is borne by 82 senators. He also demands more pressure on Russia to force peace. In view of the continued attacks on Ukrainian cities and villages, he points out that Russia mocked diplomatic initiatives and uses negotiations as an excuse for new offensive. Graham and Blumenthal support the Ukraine and prepare a new sanction package that is broadly consent to the US Senate, while clarity about the consent in the House of Representatives remains uncertain, as reports.
at the same time, Russia plans to send a delegation to talks with Ukraine to Istanbul in order to negotiate about a ceasefire. The spokesman for the Presidential Office in Moscow, Dmitri Peskow, announced that these talks should be continued on Monday. However, Ukraine has not yet confirmed whether it will participate and demands information from Russia in advance. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha emphasizes that participation depends on the transfer of a Russian memorandum. This project takes place in a context in which Russian drone attacks on the Charkiw region have requested numerous injuries. It also remains unclear to what extent the negotiations can be requested without conditions, since Russia has existed for maximum claims since the beginning of the invasion, such as BR
expectations of the negotiations
The expectations of the upcoming talks in Istanbul are low, as the UN Typed Diplomat Rosemary Dicarlo expresses. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also notices that both Russia and Ukraine are interested in a ceasefire. Against the background that an ultimatum has passed to Russia for ceasefire, Ukraine and European allies such as Germany, France, Great Britain and Poland demand a 30-day, complete and unconditional ceasefire as a prerequisite for peace calls. Russia, on the other hand, has already rejected the ultimatum and continued its attacks, while Selenskyj continues to only directly negotiate with President Vladimir Putin, not with other Russian representatives. Observers suspect that Putin is not willing to meet Selenskyj personally, the conversations could rather take place at the level of special sentences, such as Tagesschau
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz also announced further sanctions if there is no progress this week. So far, the EU has passed 16 sanctions packages against Russia; A 17th package is in preparation. Hungarian's approval of these new sanctions remains uncertain. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin praised President Selenskyj in Berlin and the changed pitch of the Federal Government, which concerns support for Ukraine.
