Weidel in Budapest: Orbán as a pioneer for the AfD? Applause for criticism!

Budapest, Ungarn - At a conference recently held in Budapest, Alice Weidel, the co-chair of the AfD, celebrated the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as a "beacon of freedom". According to Welt spoke Weidel of a "huge wind of change" that blows through Europe. At the event, which acts as part of the American CPAC conference, numerous international rights politicians gathered, including Herbert Kickl from the FPÖ and the Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Weidel took the opportunity to criticize the classification of the AfD as "secured right -wing extremist" by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The Federal Office had submitted a stand -up commitment, while the Cologne Administrative Court decides on an urgent application from the AfD. Weidel accused the protection of the constitution to spy on the opposition to criminalize the party. Those present reacted to their statements with great applause.

Orbán's support for the AfD

Viktor Orbán showed his support for Weidel via online service X and questioned that "what the hell is going in Germany" was with regard to the constitutional protection classification. This reflects the far -reaching criticism that also came from the USA. US Vice President Vance spoke of the AfD's deliberate weakening by German authorities, while Foreign Minister Rubio described the situation as "hidden tyranny". The Federal Foreign Office in Berlin rejected these allegations and emphasized that the decisions of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution are based on a thorough examination.

At the conference, Weidel also received a video greeting from Donald Trump. Her words of thanks to Hans-Georg Maassen, the former President of the Protection of the Constitution, who thanked her for the non-monitoring of the AfD, illustrated the close connection of the party to the right-wing forces in Europe. Maassen had doubted the authenticity of a video in the past, which documented right -wing extremist riots in Chemnitz.

right -wing populism in Europe

The AfD is not the only right -wing populist party in Europe that is on the rise. In Austria, FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl could become Chancellor from 2025 after the FPÖ received 28.85% of the votes in the 2024 National Council election. In Germany, too, the AfD had success in the municipal, state and European elections in 2024, especially in Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia, where it received around 30% of the votes. According to surveys, the AfD could achieve 20% of the votes in the federal election in 2025.

The political landscape in Europe is changing and there is increasing normalization of right -wing populist ideologies. This trend is also evident in countries such as Italy, France and the Netherlands. Orbán and its Fidesz party, which received 44% of the votes in the last elections, are in conflict with the EU because they are dismantling the rule of law. This interaction from a strengthening right -wing populism and the internationalization of right forces could significantly influence the political balance in Europe.

The developments speak for increasing networking and mutual support of right -wing extremists and right -wing populist parties in Europe. Political scientists observe a habituation of their ideologies and the challenges that are actually associated with such a trend reversal for liberal democracy.
