Resistance in Brandenburg: Berlin wind plans are causing a stir!
On July 10, 2025, there will be a storm of indignation in the Brandenburg region surrounding the planned wind energy areas from Berlin. The Berlin Senate Administration has identified eight locations that are being considered for the installation of wind turbines, including Pankow, Lichtenberg and Spandau. The communities of Ahrensfelde and Schöneiche, which are vehemently opposed to the project, are particularly affected, reports rbb24.
Berlin's plans to build wind energy areas only 550 to 850 meters from residential buildings fall short of the minimum distance of 1,000 meters that applies in Brandenburg. This is not only causing dissatisfaction, but also serious concerns being expressed by the mayors of the affected communities. Ahrensfelde's mayor Wilfried Gehrke (CDU) took a clear stance and pointed out the problem of proximity to the state border. Residents also criticize the possible pollution caused by noise and shadows as well as the protection of animal species in need.
Public participation in the wind power process
The affected municipalities have therefore called for early public participation in accordance with Section 3 Paragraph 1 of the Building Code. The period for comments runs from June 10 to July 11, 2025. Matters expressed during this time should be sent not only by telephone or online, but also in writing to the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing. Documents can also be viewed on site to promote transparency and participation, as can be read on berlin.de.
This public participation plays a crucial role in improving the acceptance of wind power projects among the population. Information should not only be provided, but citizens should also be actively involved in the planning process. Concerns such as noise pollution or potential impacts on the landscape must be heard in order to minimize conflicts and strengthen trust in wind power projects, explains wind-lexikon.de.
A new wind in Brandenburg's energy policy
According to the 2023 amendment, which results in higher expansion targets for renewable energies, Berlin must designate 0.25% of its land area for wind energy by the end of 2027 and even 0.5% by the end of 2032. Brandenburg has even more ambitious targets to meet, with 1.8% by the end of 2027 and 2.2% by the end of 2032. Despite this initiative, the Oderland-Spree Regional Planning Community (RPG) points out that the plans from Berlin conflict with the existing distance regulations.
The challenge for Ahrensfelde and Schöneiche is to defend themselves against Berlin's wind plans while at the same time demanding that their concerns be dealt with transparently and fairly. It will take several months to examine the comments received, which means that the municipalities will have to deal with this issue for a long time.
It remains to be seen how Berlin's plans will be implemented and whether the concerns of the affected communities will be heard. The dispute over wind power shows once again that the expansion of renewable energies is not only a technical, but also a human and political issue that arouses many emotions.
