Ten years Visual Society: Anniversary of Research and Design in Berlin

The Visual Society Program (Visop) of the University of the Arts Berlin (UDK) and the Berlin Science Center for Social Research (WZB) celebrated an important anniversary in June 2025: ten years of successful cooperation. The aim of the program is to develop visual formats that make social structures visible and understandable. This cooperation was initiated by Jutta Allmendinger, the former President of the WZB, and David Skopec, professor of visual communication at the UDK. To date, the results of this cooperation have found their expression in exhibitions, publications and various visual formats that make an important contribution to social research.

A publication in the UDK publishing house will be released on the anniversary, which the projects of the past ten years have presented. This publication will surely offer a significant review of the achievements and innovative approaches of the program and underline the commitment to the visualization of social science knowledge. At a time when visual communication plays an ever greater role, the relevance of such initiatives becomes clear, especially in a polarized society.

anniversary event

On June 4, 2025, an anniversary event will take place in the WZB, which serves to reflect on the cooperation and the exchange of experiences. The event addresses the mutual enrichment between the disciplines of social research and design. Expected speakers include Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, the President of the WZB, and David Skopec, Head of the Information Design specialist class at Udk.

Special highlights of the event are the keynotes by Birgit Schneider from the University of Potsdam and Günther Sandner from the Vienna district of Society. A panel discussion, moderated by Sebastian Jarzebski from the agency, will shed light on further perspectives. The discussants include Jutta Allmendinger, David Skopec, Nadia Zeissig and Lena Hipp.

registrations and accreditations

Interested parties are invited to accredit themselves for this important event. The accreditations are required by June 3, 2025. Another incentive offers a subsequent get-together, in which the participants have the opportunity to exchange information.

The University of the Arts Berlin, which combines all artistic disciplines and offers over 70 courses, also celebrates its 50th anniversary in its current form in 2025. Around 4,000 students, a third of whom have international backgrounds, shape the university. UDK President, since April 1, 2025, is Prof. Dr. Markus Hilgert.

The innovations in the field of visual communication are not only important for science. These approaches are also discussed in the context of larger social issues and are discussed at various events, such as at the conference "Personal Use of Digital Images" at the University of Vienna or at the Congress of DGS with topics on visual sociology. Such forums can make a significant contribution to promoting the dialogue between science and society.
