Biodiversity in Gießen: Discover the green treasures of our campus!
Heinrich-Buff-Ring 26, 35392 Gießen, Deutschland - On Thursday, June 5, 2025, an event on the subject of "Biodiversity in the city" takes place at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen (JLU). The event, which lasts from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., is organized by the JLU's sustainability, the professorship for landscape ecology and landscape planning as well as the JLU campus garden project. It includes a guided tour of the Campus Natural and Life Sciences.
The focus of the event is habitats around the interdisciplinary research center (IFZ), including flower meadows, green strips and shared garden areas. Participants get an insight into the ecological relationships and learn how these habitats influence biodiversity as well as the well -being of people, climate and the environment. After the tour there is the opportunity to exchange ideas for snacks and drinks in the campus garden.
The relevance of Stadtnatur
The importance of the city nature in Germany has developed since the 1970s. A historical view shows that the relationship between humans and nature in urban areas was considered contrary to a long time, which led to a blind spot for the nature of the cities. Originally, green spaces were required in response to urbanization, whereby bourgeois elites were significantly involved in the creation of such areas in the 19th century. They found inspiration in literature and landscape painting.
urban green infrastructure
The role of urban green infrastructure is central to the development of future -proof cities. According to a brochure by the Federal Office for Nature Conservation, urban green infrastructure is defined as the basis for the attractiveness and quality of life in cities. The goals include securing, planning and developing such infrastructures as well as nursing and management. Appropriate areas in cities should be identified and strategies for integration into urban development should be shown.
The brochure is the result of a research and development project and is supported by various associations, including the German Garden Office Head of Conference and the BUND for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany. Students, university and interested citizens can take part in the event in Gießen. Registration is required due to limited space and takes place via the website of the event.
