Weingarten, Deutschland - On May 30, 2025, the traditional bloodstream in Weingarten, the largest rider processionary event in Europe, took place under bright sunshine. Around 1,800 riders in elegant fracks and cylinders took part in the festive procession that is reminiscent of the over 900 year old tradition. This special event serves to worship a relic that is supposed to contain a drop of blood.

The bloodstore traditionally begins after Ascension Day and pulls across the fields around Weingarten. Ceremonial highlights are connected to a trade fair in the basilica, which was held by Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesemann at 11:30 a.m. In the run -up to the fair, the relic was handed over to the baroque basilica at 7 a.m. This relic, a golden cross with gemstones and a mountain crystal, was held up to horse by Dean Ekkehard Schmid. It contains a tube with earth and drop of blood of Jesus and lies all year round in the altar of the basilica.

However, the celebrations were overshadowed by an incident. In the Öschweg area, two blood rider rushed from their horses. Police President Uwe Stürmer confirmed that one of the riders briefly lost awareness, while the other may have suffered a broken hip. The German Red Cross was quickly on site to supply the fallen riders. The identity of the riders and their group membership are still unknown.

The safety precautions during the blood inner were tautly organized. To ensure that everything runs smoothly, access was blocked and drones were used to monitor the event. Despite the fall of the riders, the atmosphere was not clouded by the over 20,000 expected spectators, including a delegation from Weingartens partner town of Mantua.
