There have been some worrying road traffic incidents in the Barnim region in recent days, which once again highlight how dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol can be. The local police have recorded several incidents indicating alcohol-related traffic offenses.
A particularly worrying case occurred on August 28th in Wandlitz, where a 32-year-old was driving an unregistered Nissan Micra. He had a license plate attached to another vehicle and had a breath alcohol test of 1.51 per mille. After a blood sample, the man was released while police secured the license plates and vehicle keys Barnim Current reported.
Traffic accidents and their consequences
There was a traffic accident in Biesenthal on Thursday between a Volvo XC60 and an Opel Crossland, with both drivers suffering minor injuries. Total damage: around 10,000 euros. Another incident occurred on Friday morning on the B158, where a truck collided with a roadside tree while a Hyundai overturned. The driver of the Hyundai suffered minor injuries and damage is estimated to be in the six-figure range. The criminal police are also investigating here.
Another alarming incident happened in Finowfurt, where a 19-year-old was driving a VW Polo under the influence of intoxicants and was stopped by the police. His further journey was stopped and a blood sample was taken. Another case in Ahrensfelde, in which a Mercedes Vito with stolen license plates fled and collided with a tree, also ended with injuries for both the vehicle's occupants and a police officer.
The numbers speak volumes
The scope of these incidents is made clear by the current statistics on alcohol-related accidents in Germany. According to a publication by the Federal Statistical Office, there were a total of 37,172 alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2023, with a tragic 18,900 people injured or killed. On average, nearly 102 of these accidents occur every day, highlighting the need to raise awareness of the dangers of drink driving. The previous annual comparison even shows a decrease in alcohol-related accidents of 4.1 percent, but the numbers are still higher than those from 2019 to 2021 VPV communicates.
What is particularly alarming is the fact that people with a blood alcohol level of just 0.3 have an increased risk of accidents. The legal limit is 0.5 per mille, with a zero per mille limit for novice drivers and drivers under 21 years of age. Drunk driving can not only lead to high costs, but can also have fatal consequences for yourself and other road users.
Police and other organizations are continually working to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol driving. Everyone should do their part to further reduce the number of traffic accidents in the future and to be safer on the road.
