Armin Schubert: Award for commitment and new projects in Brandenburg

On June 27, 2025, Armin Schubert, a committed cultural educator and founder of the Youth Art School Gallery Sonnensegel, received the State Parliament Medal for his services to the community. Schubert, who founded the important institution in 1990, has been implementing the “Bücherkinder” project since 2007, which focuses on the cultural education of children and young people.

“I would like to encourage children and young people to look at the world in a differentiated way and to think independently,” explains Schubert. He emphasizes that it is important to get involved even in uncomfortable situations. With the help of his projects, he not only teaches young people artistic skills, but also values such as social commitment.

Cultural engagement in Brandenburg

On June 17, 2024, an event organized by the Brandenburg Book Children took place in Berlin under the motto: “Our today goes into tomorrow, fed by yesterday.” The aim was to address challenges through cultural work and encourage engagement with the world. Schubert also criticizes the maximization thinking of our time and warns of the dangers to democracy, supported by high-ranking representatives such as Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

A central element of his work are books and works of art that are created together with the children. In this context, a lecture on “cultural education” can also be expected as part of the Stendal university lectures. Schubert talks about the relevance of analogue learning in a digital world in which children are often overwhelmed.

Fire brigade operation in Brandenburg

While cultural activities are flourishing in the city, there was a recent firefighting operation at the fashion store “Underground”. A broken power line was discovered by an employee when she opened the store. Fortunately, there was no fire, but the fire department had to intervene to clear the air in the store. It remains unclear why the smoke detectors did not alarm.

New businesses and initiatives

At the same time, a new shop for oilcloths, tablecloths and bags was opened by Markus Eberts in Brandenburg an der Havel. The new opening is intended to help revitalize the main street, which has been empty for a long time. Eberts has signed a long-term lease, which speaks for the positive development of the area.

In addition, a group of volunteer firefighters in the Brück office are training to become first responder units in order to be able to help more quickly in emergencies. This initiative is particularly important because the legal deadline for help in Germany is 15 minutes. In order to finance the necessary equipment and training, the helpers need around 4,500 euros and plan to collect this sum through donations.

Another future-oriented plan concerns the development of a solar park in Brück, which would like to install modules on 77 hectares. Agri-PV technology is also being considered to enable dual use of solar park and agriculture. Discussions with land owners are already underway and the planning is being coordinated with the local administration.

Overall, it is clear that there is a lot of movement in Brandenburg an der Havel, both in the cultural and social areas. Citizens are called upon to actively participate in shaping their community, with Schubert and his initiatives making an important contribution.
